Ukraine's Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced his resignation on Wednesday, becoming the latest senior official to step down as part of a broader cabinet reshuffle directed by President Volodymyr Zelensky. The move comes as Kyiv continues to navigate the ongoing demands of Russia's full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.
Fedorov, who took over the defence ministry in January, shared the news in a lengthy post on Telegram, where he reflected on his tenure and outlined the accomplishments achieved under his leadership. He described the opportunity to serve the Ukrainian people in the role as a great honour.
Championing Drone Warfare and Military Reform
During his time as defence minister, Fedorov placed particular emphasis on the development and deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles. Drones have become a defining feature of the conflict along the front lines, and Fedorov was recognized as one of the earliest and most vocal advocates for expanding their use in combat operations.
The minister highlighted the significant growth in domestic drone production and their battlefield application since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. He also pointed to the launch of comprehensive army reforms aimed at modernizing Ukraine's armed forces and strengthening their operational capabilities.
Beyond drones, Fedorov played a role in securing a critical communications arrangement with Elon Musk to provide Starlink satellite connectivity for Ukrainian forces. The deal not only enhanced connectivity for Ukrainian troops but also restricted Russian soldiers' access to the satellite network.
A Historic Appointment
When he was appointed at the age of 35, Fedorov became the youngest defence minister in Ukraine's history. His selection was driven by the objective of bringing renewed energy and urgency to Kyiv's war effort at a time when the country faced an intensifying conflict on multiple fronts.
