Elon Musk's tunneling venture, The Boring Company, is reportedly in discussions to secure a $4 billion funding round that would value the startup at approximately $20 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The deal has not yet closed, and the terms could still shift before any agreement is finalized. If the reported valuation holds, it would mark a dramatic increase from The Boring Company's previous valuation of $5.7 billion, which was established in 2022.
Las Vegas Tunnel Network and Regulatory Scrutiny
The Boring Company has already constructed a network of tunnels beneath Las Vegas, where Tesla vehicles shuttle customers between various stations. The system represents the startup's most prominent operational project to date.
However, the company's tunneling work has not been without significant issues. Workers have suffered serious injuries during construction, raising concerns about safety protocols. Additionally, Nevada regulators stated last year that The Boring Company had violated environmental regulations nearly 800 times, highlighting ongoing compliance challenges.
Expansion Ambitions Across Multiple Cities
Despite these regulatory hurdles, The Boring Company has announced plans to build tunnel networks in Nashville and Dubai. The Wall Street Journal also reports that the startup has pitched projects in Baltimore, Chicago, and Los Angeles, indicating broad ambitions for urban transportation infrastructure.
