Cameron Parish, a small coastal community in Louisiana with roughly 4,700 residents, is on track to become one of the wealthiest counties in the region, powered by a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export boom that has rewritten its fortunes.

Michael Fewell, president of the elected council that governs the parish, says the community is poised for unprecedented prosperity. "We are going to have more money than we need," he says, reflecting on a turnaround few could have imagined when Hurricane Rita devastated the area in 2005.

That storm destroyed or severely damaged more than 90% of homes in Cameron Parish, leaving behind a repair bill of $2.75 billion (£2 billion). Fewell, who was 16 at the time, recalls driving his truck through devastated towns, collecting dead cattle that had been flung into homes and scattered along roads. National Guard helicopters flew in drinking water between his stops.

"It looked like a war zone," he says. "They were, by far, some of the darkest days of my life."

How LNG Transformed Cameron Parish

The parish's revival centers on liquefied natural gas, a fuel created by super-chilling natural gas to -162°C (-260°F), condensing it into a liquid that occupies 600 times less space than in its gaseous form. This dramatic reduction in volume makes it practical to store and transport the fuel by tanker ships across oceans.

On a marsh in Cameron where cattle once grazed now sits Sabine Pass, the world's largest LNG export terminal, which began sending fuel overseas in 2016. The facility alone can process 29.5 million tonnes of LNG per year. Cameron Parish is also home to two additional LNG terminals, and a fourth is under construction.

That fourth facility, called Commonwealth LNG, represents a $13 billion investment. Construction began in May, and the terminal is expected to produce 9.5 million tonnes of LNG annually by 2030 — enough to heat six million homes. Across all of its LNG terminals, Cameron Parish is projected to receive more than $4 billion in tax revenues over the next decade.

The scale of the operation is difficult to overstate. A decade ago, the United States barely exported any LNG. Today, it is the world's largest supplier, and Louisiana ships approximately 60% of all American LNG. Two-thirds of Louisiana's LNG exports depart from Cameron alone. The gas arrives via pipelines from elsewhere in the state, from Texas, and even from as far away as Pennsylvania.

Tim Wyatt, president of Commonwealth's parent company Caturus, attributes the boom to global instability and America's natural advantages. "There is cheap, abundant supply here, while being a flexible, reliable, relatively low cost and transparent producer that flows to the places that need it the most," he says.

Local Wealth and Environmental Tensions

The economic benefits for Cameron Parish are measurable. Median local household income reached $75,000 in 2024, a 25% increase from $59,555 in 2010. For a community nearly emptied out two decades ago, the influx of tax revenue and high-paying jobs represents a future that once seemed impossible.

Not everyone, however, sees the boom as entirely positive. LNG tankers are so large that shipping channels must be dug deeper and wider to accommodate them. When dredged material is not properly contained, it spills into nearby waters. In one incident last year, approximately 15,000 cubic yards of removed material spread beyond its permitted area.

Fewell acknowledges the friction. "There is a lot of ship traffic and there's been some frustration, it's fully understood," he says. When asked about pushback from the local community, he points to the wealth creation that has accompanied the industry's growth.

Susan Bourgeois, secretary of Louisiana Economic Development, emphasizes the strategic value of the state's LNG exports. "They want reliable relationships for their energy," she says of European buyers, noting that purchasers across Europe have shifted to longer-term contracts since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, rather than buying cargo-by-cargo as before. "It's about dependability and predictability, that's what matters."

Europe's Growing Dependence on American Gas

Much of the overseas demand for American LNG originates in Europe. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, European nations rushed to replace Russian natural gas. More recently, this year's conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has further increased Europe's reliance on American LNG, as Iran's efforts to block the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted exports from Qatar, another major LNG supplier.

According to energy analysts at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), the United States now supplies approximately two-thirds of Europe's gas imports, a sharp increase from roughly a quarter in 2021. That share is expected to grow: the EU is projected to source as much as 80% of its LNG imports from the United States by 2030.

This dependence comes at a cost, argues Ana Maria Jaller-Makarewicz, an analyst at IEEFA. She says Europe is now reliant on US LNG supplies and competes with Asia for the same cargoes, a dynamic that pushes prices upward.

The impact is felt most acutely in Germany, the EU's largest manufacturer, which produces more than a quarter of the bloc's industrial output. At InfraLeuna, a vast chemicals and plastics industrial park in central Germany, site director Christof Guenther has watched the facility's annual gas bill climb from €60 million ($68 million; £51 million) before the war in Ukraine to an expected €200 million this year, amid the Iran crisis.

American gas is not a cheap solution for European industry, Guenther argues. Domestic natural gas prices in the United States run about 20 to 25% of what European buyers pay, he notes. Once the gas is converted into LNG and shipped across the Atlantic, the price rises dramatically.

The Ripple Effect on European Households

The cost increases extend well beyond industrial users. Natural gas accounts for 12% of German power generation, and half of German homes are equipped with gas boilers, meaning that household energy costs are directly affected by LNG pricing.

According to Clean Energy Wire, a Berlin-based news outlet covering Germany's energy transition, the average German home now pays 31% more for electricity than before the Ukraine war. Gas prices for German households have risen by more than 74% over the same period.

The pattern is replicated across the European Union. Official Eurostat figures show that household electricity bills across the EU have risen 30% since 2021. In the United Kingdom, electricity prices are now approximately 38% higher than in mid-2021, while gas prices have increased by 120%, according to data from the regulator Ofgem.

Jaller-Makarewicz describes this situation as the new normal, one that will persist until the EU reduces its overall gas consumption. However, a 2025 US-EU trade deal has further locked in the relationship, committing Europe to $750 billion in American energy purchases over three years, encompassing LNG, oil, and nuclear fuel.

What Comes Next for Cameron and Europe

For Cameron Parish, the immediate future holds continued growth. With the Commonwealth LNG terminal under construction and tax revenues projected to exceed $4 billion over the next decade, the parish is positioned to fund public services and infrastructure at levels previously unimaginable for a community of fewer than 5,000 residents. Fewell's aspiration is personal as well as civic: he wants to bring young people back to the parish, offering them high-paying jobs close to home — a prospect he never thought possible while growing up there.

For Europe, the trajectory points toward even deeper reliance on American LNG. With the 2025 trade deal anchoring the relationship and geopolitical instability continuing to disrupt alternative suppliers, the EU's exposure to US gas pricing is likely to intensify through 2030 and beyond. Watch for further shifts in European energy policy, potential efforts to reduce gas consumption, and the pace at which new Cameron Parish terminals come online — all of which will shape both sides of the Atlantic.
