Samsung has introduced a new flexible display technology aimed at making foldable phones slimmer, more durable, and significantly less prone to the creasing that has long plagued the category. Called Flex Titanium, the technology represents the culmination of insights gathered across seven generations of foldable devices, according to the company.
The new display is set to make its first appearance in the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Given that Samsung Display has a longstanding supply relationship with Apple, the technology could also find its way into the rumored foldable iPhone expected later this year.
How Titanium Strengthens the Foldable Screen
The Flex Titanium display relies on two titanium-based components working in tandem to enhance strength, flexibility, and overall slimness. A titanium-alloy film sits beneath the OLED panel, providing structural support that Samsung says delivers "20 times greater mechanical stiffness" compared to conventional polymer film. Despite this added rigidity, the film measures roughly one-third the thickness of an average human hair.
A second element — a titanium plate positioned underneath the film — enables tighter bonding with the display module. This improves the screen's stability when the device is unfolded while still maintaining the flexibility required to accommodate repeated folding, according to Samsung.
Beyond structural improvements, Samsung claims the new display technology will also consume less power and produce what the company describes as "ultra-vivid" display visual resolution. The company emphasized that these advancements work together to create a display that maximizes content immersion on a seamless screen while keeping the overall profile slim.
Tackling the Persistent Crease Issue
Visible creases remain one of the most persistent pain points across all foldable phones currently available on the market. Samsung's Flex Titanium represents its most recent effort to reduce — and potentially eradicate — this longstanding issue.
In its announcement, Samsung stated that the combined advancements enable "a strong foldable display that maximizes content immersion on a seamless screen and reduces crease visibility — all while keeping it slim." The company added that "by balancing strength, flexibility and structural stability, Samsung continues to set the bar for foldable displays."
Earlier this year, Samsung Display also showcased a creaseless OLED prototype, fueling speculation that it could be destined for Apple's highly anticipated folding iPhone. At the time, Samsung Display characterized the prototype as "an R&D concept, with no fixed timeline or plan for commercialization." However, subsequent reports have indicated that the company has signed a three-year exclusivity agreement to supply screens for the purportedly crease-free Apple foldable.
