Microsoft's 13-inch Surface Laptop was once a straightforward recommendation for anyone seeking MacBook Air–level build quality and battery life in a Windows machine. The previous model, priced at $900 with 16GB of RAM, earned praise as one of the better thin-and-light notebooks available. The new entry-level version retains the same exterior hardware but arrives with a significant compromise: half the memory and a higher price tag of $950.
Familiar Hardware, Unfamiliar Shortcomings
On the outside, little has changed. The keyboard remains tactile and comfortable, the trackpad is responsive, and the 1080p webcam delivers sharp, clear video. Battery life continues to be a strong point, easily lasting around 10 hours on a charge. The processor — an eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus — is nearly identical to last year's chip, with a slightly faster boost speed. In the previous model, this CPU handled light photo editing in Lightroom Classic without issue. The difference this time is that the older laptop had 16GB of RAM, and the new one does not.
The display is a 13-inch 1920 x 1280 touchscreen running at 60Hz. Storage comes in at 256GB of UFS, which feels increasingly restrictive given current SSD prices. Port selection includes one USB-A 3.1, two USB-C 3.2, and a 3.5mm combo audio jack — a modest offering. The laptop weighs 2.7 pounds and houses a 50Wh battery. Connectivity covers Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. None of these specs are inherently problematic; the issue is what surrounds them.
Windows 11 on 8GB: A Daily Struggle
For basic web browsing and video streaming, the Surface Laptop generally held up. The problems emerged during everyday multitasking that should not strain a $950 machine. During a Microsoft Teams call where the host streamed a brief video, the entire laptop froze for several seconds. At the time, roughly 10 Chrome tabs were open across two virtual desktops, with Slack and Signal also running — a workload that is reasonable by modern standards, and one that did not even include active webcams.
These temporary freezes occurred several times per day, sometimes while working in Google Docs with nothing streaming in the background. Keeping the Performance tab open in Task Manager revealed that the system was almost always using around 6.7GB of the 7.6GB of memory available to the user. After a fresh reboot with minimal startup applications, Windows 11 alone consumed 4.2GB — roughly the minimum Microsoft specifies for running the operating system. That leaves almost no headroom for actual productivity.
Limiting usage to about six Chrome tabs, closing Signal, and avoiding virtual desktops brought memory consumption down to approximately 5.5GB. The laptop is workable for light loads under those constraints, but the experience requires constant vigilance about how many applications and tabs are active — an unreasonable expectation for a brand-new device at this price point. There is also the question of longevity: if the system struggles on day one, its usability in five years is doubtful.
