Meta has confirmed its departure from the RE100, a prominent corporate renewable energy initiative, after ten years of membership. The exit comes as the company accelerates a sweeping natural gas expansion to meet the enormous electricity demands of its artificial intelligence data centers.
A Meta spokesperson described the split as mutual. The company declined to elaborate on specific reasons, and the Climate Group, the UK-based nonprofit that operates the RE100, did not respond to requests for comment. Recharge News first reported the departure.
A Decade-Long Commitment Comes to an End
The RE100, a project of the Climate Group co-founded by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, provides policy and technical support to corporations pursuing a transition to 100% renewable energy. The initiative currently counts 444 members, including Meta's tech rivals Apple, Google, and Microsoft.
Meta had previously pledged to the RE100 that it would run its entire operations on renewable electricity by 2020. The Climate Group recently tightened its guidance, requiring companies to submit more rigorous reporting on their progress toward renewable energy targets.
While Meta would not discuss the reasons behind its exit, the timing aligns with a dramatic shift in the company's energy strategy. Over the past year, Meta has funded the construction of at least a dozen natural gas power plants to support its growing fleet of AI data centers.
From Ohio to Louisiana: A Massive Fossil Fuel Expansion
Meta's move into natural gas began with a 200-megawatt behind-the-meter gas power plant in Ohio, announced in June of last year, designed to supply one of its data centers directly.
Two months later, the company unveiled plans for three large natural gas power plants in Louisiana to feed its Hyperion data center. Then in April, Meta announced funding for seven additional gas plants for the same project. Together, the ten Louisiana facilities will generate 7.5 gigawatts of electricity — enough to power the entire state of South Dakota and more.
Meta told TechCrunch through a spokesperson that it remains committed to matching its data center electricity usage with 100% clean and renewable energy. However, the company's heavy reliance on natural gas complicates that claim.
The Pollution Reality Behind Clean Energy Claims
Although natural gas burns more cleanly than coal, it remains a significant source of pollution. A single 1-gigawatt data center operating around the clock and powered exclusively by natural gas would release approximately 438 metric tons of nitrogen oxides, 149 metric tons of fine particulate matter, 61 metric tons of sulfur oxides, and 298 metric tons of carbon monoxide annually.
