Meta AI Gets Major Upgrade: Calendar Integration, Autonomous Tasks, and Steerable Research

Meta is substantially expanding the capabilities of its AI chatbot, transforming it from a conversational tool into a more versatile digital assistant. The move is designed to position the company more aggressively against competitors such as Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude.

A Strategic Reversal

The update represents a clear shift in direction for Meta. As reported by Alex Heath, Chief Product Officer Chris Cox told employees last year that the company's AI efforts would prioritize entertainment and social connection, deliberately steering clear of the productivity-focused approach taken by OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic — which Cox characterized as "focusing obsessively on productivity."

That stance has now changed. In a blog post, Meta framed the latest update as its "next step toward personal superintelligence," a vision that CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been promoting as the trajectory of artificial intelligence.

Driving the update is Meta's recently launched Muse Spark 1.1 model. According to the company, this model expands what the chatbot can do, pushing it past its previous functions of fielding questions, creating images, and producing written documents.

Calendar Integration and Hands-Off Task Management

A central feature of the upgrade is calendar connectivity. Meta AI can now draw from a user's calendar to produce daily briefings and summaries of the day ahead. For event planning, the assistant can look up dining options and cross-reference the user's calendar to identify an open date.

The chatbot can also browse Facebook Marketplace to locate used furniture that aligns with a user's kitchen renovation budget. Meta emphasizes that tasks need to be configured only once, after which the assistant operates autonomously. This means it can deliver calendar briefings without repeated prompts, produce weekly meal plans, and send notifications when tracked products are back in stock.

Smarter Research with Real-Time Steering

Meta reports that the assistant has improved in collecting and condensing web-based information, organizing it into formats such as reports, presentations, or action plans. Another new capability lets users redirect the AI partway through a response — functionality comparable to what ChatGPT already offers.

Rollout Begins in Select Markets

Starting today, the refreshed assistant is launching in "select markets" via both the Meta AI app and the web interface. The company intends to broaden access to additional countries and other platforms — WhatsApp among them — over the coming weeks.

As Meta pivots toward productivity, the competitive landscape for AI assistants continues to intensify. Will these new features be enough to draw users away from established tools like ChatGPT and Gemini? Share this article and let us know your thoughts on Meta's evolving AI strategy.
