Google has announced its largest solar power and battery storage purchase to date, a massive project in Arkansas that will eventually become the biggest solar facility in the United States. The Steel River Energy Center, located approximately 30 miles north of Memphis, Tennessee, represents a significant commitment by the tech giant to renewable energy as it works to offset the growing electricity demands of its data centers.
The first two phases of the project will add 1 gigawatt of solar capacity and 1.9 gigawatt-hours of battery storage to Google's energy portfolio. Together, these phases will generate enough electricity to meet roughly 6% of Arkansas's peak power demand. Google is both investing in the project alongside developer Cypress Creek Energy and purchasing the entire output of the first two phases.
Electricity from the facility will flow directly to the grid rather than exclusively powering Google's operations. This approach allows the company to offset demand from its data centers while supporting broader grid infrastructure.
A Three-Phase Megaproject
When all three phases are complete, the Steel River Energy Center will boast approximately 1.8 gigawatts of solar capacity and 2.9 gigawatt-hours of battery storage. The third and final phase is scheduled to connect to the grid in 2029. Cypress Creek has already secured $3.5 billion in financing to support the first two phases of the development.
By pairing solar panels with large-scale batteries, the facility will be able to deliver power around the clock, addressing one of the traditional limitations of solar energy. This configuration also advances Google's goal of matching its electricity consumption with clean power on an hourly basis, a more rigorous standard than simply offsetting annual energy use.
The speed at which the project can be deployed is notable: nearly 2 gigawatts of solar capacity in roughly three years. This timeline suggests that renewable energy paired with storage can scale quickly enough to meet surging demand from data centers and other large electricity consumers.
Contrast With xAI's Gas-Powered Approach
Google's clean energy investment stands in sharp contrast to the strategy employed by xAI, which operates an unpermitted natural gas power plant approximately 40 miles south of the Steel River site. Elon Musk's AI company has invested heavily in natural gas to power its Colossus data centers, despite Musk also running Tesla, a company that manufactures solar panels and grid-scale batteries.
