Over the past year, Google's AI-generated search answers have expanded dramatically, moving from a niche feature to a dominant presence in everyday search activity. According to a new report by market intelligence firm Similarweb, AI Overviews now appear in 43% of Google searches, a sharp rise from just 15% one year earlier.
The data signals a fundamental transformation in how people interact with the world's most popular search engine. What began as an optional AI layer layered on top of traditional search results has evolved into a core component of the search experience itself, with Google increasingly directing users into AI Overviews where they can continue their research through the company's more conversational AI Mode.
AI Mode Visits Surge Alongside Conversational Queries
The growth extends beyond AI Overviews. Visits to Google's AI Mode climbed from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026, reflecting a broader user shift toward conversational interactions with search.
Similarweb's analysis highlights a notable change in search behavior. The average length of Google search queries has increased over the past year, indicating that users are moving away from short keyword-based searches in favor of longer, more natural language prompts designed to engage with AI systems.
This evolution effectively turns Google from a tool that directs users to external websites into a destination in its own right. Instead of presenting a list of blue links to click through, Google increasingly generates its own answers by pulling information from the websites it indexes, keeping users on its platform for longer periods.
Publishers Face Mounting Traffic Losses
The shift has drawn sharp concern from publishers, who report significant declines in referral traffic as AI-generated citations frequently fail to produce clicks. Similarweb previously documented this trend, noting that the impact has been particularly severe for news organizations.
In response to these challenges, tech infrastructure company Cloudflare has introduced tools that enable publishers to block AI crawlers from accessing their websites. The system allows publishers to demand compensation from AI companies through a marketplace model, requiring payment before granting access to their content.
