Google is introducing a selfie video feature as a new authentication method for users to access their accounts, the company announced on Thursday. The move places Google among a growing number of technology firms that are betting on biometric verification rather than traditional passwords as the future of online identity confirmation.

The company says the selfie video option gives users an additional way to sign in when they find themselves locked out or unable to reach their usual phone or computer.

How the Selfie Video Login Works

To set up the feature, users look into their device's camera and follow on-screen guidance to perform a series of head movements, such as turning to the right or left and nodding. These motions allow the system to capture the face from multiple angles, creating a reference video stored by Google.

If a user later encounters difficulty signing in, they can record a new selfie video to regain access. Google then compares the newly recorded video against the one captured during setup to verify that the person attempting to log in is the same individual who originally configured the feature.

Tackling Deepfakes and Bot Impersonation

One of the central challenges Google aims to address is confirming that a real person — not an automated bot or a manipulated video — is present on the other side of the camera. In a blog post, the company explained that it applies multiple layers of security to thwart impersonation attempts, including those involving fake photographs and deepfake videos.

Google matches the login video against the previously stored selfie and requires users to carry out simple movements to demonstrate that the recording is live. The company also said it relies on its standard security practices to detect and block suspicious sign-in attempts.

The need for such measures extends beyond individual user accounts. As AI-generated video becomes increasingly realistic, liveness verification is becoming a fundamental requirement for any organization that handles logins, financial transactions, or sensitive personal data.

While the selfie video option may help users recover locked accounts and protect against fraud, it also raises questions about the collection and storage of biometric data. Google addressed some of these concerns by stating that selfie videos are stored securely using encryption and remain protected even when not actively in use. The company also said users have the option to delete their stored selfie videos from their Google account at any time.
