The microsatellites, launched on July 7, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, represent a major step forward in early wildfire detection technology.
Developed under the management of the nonprofit Earth Fire Alliance, the FireSat constellation is the first satellite network purpose-built specifically for identifying wildfires. According to the organization, the program aims to detect fires that other satellite systems may overlook, including smaller blazes that can quickly grow into devastating infernos if left unchecked.
Initial Operational Capability Reached
The July 7 launch marks a critical milestone for the FireSat program, signaling its transition to what the Earth Fire Alliance describes as "initial operational capability." Following a three-month testing and calibration period, the three satellites are expected to begin actively delivering wildfire detection data to fire agencies before the end of 2026.
Once fully operational, the constellation will provide coverage of every fire-prone region on Earth at least twice per day. Initial detection services will focus on the United States, Australia, and Europe, regions that have experienced increasingly severe wildfire seasons in recent years.
The timing of the launch is particularly significant, as smoke from hundreds of active wildfires continues to affect air quality across large swaths of North America. The FireSat program aims to give firefighters and emergency responders earlier warnings, potentially allowing them to contain blazes before they spread uncontrollably.
Designed by Muon Space With Major Financial Backing
The satellites were designed and manufactured by Muon Space, a California-based satellite manufacturer. The company engineered the microsatellites specifically to detect thermal signatures from wildfires, including smaller fires that existing satellite systems often fail to capture.
Google has played a substantial role in bringing the FireSat constellation to life, contributing more than $15 million to support the initial deployment of the satellite network. The technology giant's financial commitment has been instrumental in moving the project from concept to operational reality.
