Cursor Launches India-First Subscription at ₹649 Ahead of SpaceX Acquisition

A Strategic Bet on India's Developer Ecosystem

Cursor, the AI coding startup, has launched Cursor Start, a country-specific subscription plan priced at ₹649 per month (approximately $7) — significantly lower than its standard $20-per-month Pro subscription. The move marks the company's most aggressive push into India to date, targeting one of the world's largest developer markets as a key growth driver.

According to Simon Green, Cursor's head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, India is already the company's third-largest market globally and boasts its highest concentration of power users. The startup's user base in the country has more than tripled over the past year, reflecting the rapid adoption of AI-assisted coding tools among Indian developers.

Green told TechCrunch that the combination of scale and India's deep pool of software engineering talent made it the first market where Cursor chose to localize pricing. He described the technical competency and existing engineering talent in the country as a natural fit for the product.

India's significance as a software developer hub continues to grow. GitHub reported earlier this year that the country has more than 27 million developers on its platform, second only to the United States, with more than two million joining in 2026 alone.

What Cursor Start Includes — and What It Doesn't

The Cursor Start plan is designed for developers who need more AI-assisted coding capacity than the free tier provides but may not require the full Pro subscription. It includes access to Cursor's Composer 2.5 model and Grok 4.5, with higher usage limits than the free tier. Subscribers also gain access to cloud agents, the iOS app, plugins, Model Context Protocol support, hooks, and skills.

However, the plan comes with notable limitations compared to the $20-per-month Pro subscription. Start does not include access to frontier AI models from providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic, nor does it offer advanced features like Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, and the Cursor SDK.

Green emphasized that the lower-priced plan is intended to broaden access rather than replace Cursor's flagship offering. The plan is billed in Indian rupees and supports payments through credit and debit cards as well as India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

To ensure the subscription remains exclusive to individual users in India, Cursor is implementing multiple verification checks, including measures to deter access through virtual private networks (VPNs).

A Commercially Sustainable Model

Green clarified that the India-specific pricing was designed to be commercially sustainable rather than a loss leader. The plan is viable because it is built around Cursor's own AI models, which carry lower operating costs than relying primarily on third-party frontier models.

Cursor is not alone in tailoring pricing for the Indian market. OpenAI and Anthropic have both introduced India-specific plans over the past year as global AI companies compete for users in one of the world's fastest-growing AI markets. OpenAI, for instance, launched its sub-$5 ChatGPT Go in India before expanding the lower-priced subscription to other markets — a precedent Green acknowledged when discussing the possibility of expanding Cursor Start beyond India.

Green indicated that if the model proves successful, Cursor could bring localized pricing to other markets, though the company is currently focused on serving demand in India.

Building Local Presence Ahead of SpaceX Deal

Beyond localized pricing, Cursor is expanding its physical presence in India through new hires. The company recently brought on its first salesperson in India and expects another leader to join in Delhi. Cursor is also establishing a government affairs office and has made three technical customer support hires as it builds out operations across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

Green noted that Cursor's enterprise push in India is still in its early stages, with adoption primarily driven by individual developers, startups, and universities. However, the company sees significant opportunities in sectors such as banking and large enterprises as it ramps up local sales efforts.

The India expansion comes just over a month after Elon Musk's SpaceX agreed to acquire Cursor in a $60 billion all-stock deal, following SpaceX's blockbuster initial public offering. The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter. SpaceX and Cursor have been partnered since April to develop a next-generation coding and knowledge work AI.

Green said Cursor will continue to operate independently until the transaction closes and that the India expansion plans were already in motion before the deal was announced. Once the acquisition is finalized, SpaceX's existing presence in India through Starlink could help Cursor scale faster by reducing commercial and operational barriers.
