Hundreds of conversations between users and Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude were inadvertently made discoverable through Google and other search engines, exposing personal and professional information that individuals had shared with the tool.
The issue came to light after Reddit users identified more than 200 conversations across at least 25 pages of search results. Some of these exchanges had taken place only weeks earlier, and many contained sensitive details ranging from resume information to proprietary corporate research.
How Shared Links Became Publicly Indexed
The exposure stemmed from Claude's built-in feature that allows users to share conversations by generating a link. While Anthropic designed these links so that only people possessing them could view the content, search engines such as Google, Bing, Brave, and DuckDuckGo archived the pages, making them appear in search results.
Anthropic's spokeswoman emphasized that users retain control over whether to share their conversations and that the links themselves are not guessable. She explained that once a person shares a conversation, the content becomes publicly accessible and, like other public web content, may be archived by third-party services.
However, the share interface within Claude informs users only that anyone with the link can view the contents. It does not explicitly warn that the link could end up indexed by search engines and visible to the broader public.
Sensitive Information Found in Exposed Chats
The discovered conversations covered a wide range of topics and revealed varying degrees of personal information. In one exchange from April, a user asked Claude to draft an unpublished blog post about cloud security that included details of a corporate project. Another user sought help with their resume, inadvertently exposing their name, contact information, and work history.
Some conversations appeared to involve proprietary research conducted for professional purposes, including healthcare-related work that contained transcripts of private conversations. Another user asked Claude how to literally transform into a nine-tailed fox, and the chatbot responded by generating an image claiming the user had been granted fully functional fox powers.
In a conversation from last year, a user asked Claude whether it wanted to help them or help Anthropic more. The chatbot replied that it experiences something akin to wanting to help the user.
