Apple's iOS 27 is now available as a public beta, marking the first time the general public can access the company's significantly reimagined Siri assistant. Unveiled at Apple's WWDC event in June under the name "Siri AI," the updated assistant moves beyond basic voice commands, introducing a chatbot-style interface and weaving itself deeply into the iPhone experience.
Early testing of the developer beta suggests Apple's overhaul is a meaningful improvement. The assistant proved capable of locating old vacation photos, sending text messages, and recommending restaurants using simple prompts. While not without flaws, the new Siri appears to offer genuine utility, particularly for users who previously ignored the assistant altogether.
Nabila Popal, a senior research director specializing in consumer devices at the International Data Corporation, praised the integration. She noted that Apple has embedded Siri AI throughout the entire ecosystem, allowing access regardless of where users are on their device. The assistant can be engaged through voice or through a dedicated app, making its accessibility and operating system integration particularly well executed.
Chatbot App, Personal Context, and System-Wide Search
One of the most visible changes is a new chatbot-style application that functions primarily as an interaction log. Users can review past conversations, revisit previous threads, or initiate new chats. However, since Siri is now built into the iPhone's search functionality, starting new chats within the app may not be necessary for most users.
Privacy-conscious users can manage how long Siri conversations are stored by navigating to Settings, selecting Siri AI, and opening the Keep Conversations tab. Options include retaining chats indefinitely, for one year, or for 30 days. Selecting a shorter duration automatically deletes older conversations.
The app currently lacks a memory feature for storing user preferences, a capability standard in competing chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude. This means users must repeatedly provide context, such as dietary restrictions, when requesting assistance. As a fresh release, additional capabilities are expected over time.
A critical component of Siri AI is the indexing process, which builds a searchable, on-device database labeled "Optimizing Search and Siri" in recent developer betas. This process can take over a week to complete, depending on the device, available storage, and software version. Josh Clark, principal at digital-design agency Big Medium and co-author of "Sentient Design: Crafting Intelligent Interfaces with AI," explained that Siri AI has access to context that external chatbots cannot easily obtain because it is integrated directly into the operating system.
Once indexed, Siri can pull data from across the device to answer questions. In testing, asking about upcoming plans prompted Siri to scan text messages, calendar entries, and group chats, surfacing details about pending orders, social events, and birthday parties. Users who prefer to limit Siri's access to specific apps can disable the "Learn from this App" toggle in the Siri AI section of Settings, though these permissions are enabled by default.
