Apple is reportedly developing its first pair of smart glasses, but the tech giant is taking extra time to ensure the product doesn't become the next privacy controversy. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple has delayed its launch timeline and is actively working on privacy measures that would set its wearable apart from competitors.
The smart glasses were originally targeted for an early 2027 release. However, Gurman reports that Apple has now pushed the unveiling to its Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2027, with the product becoming available to consumers by the end of that year. The additional time will allow Apple to refine both the hardware and the privacy messaging surrounding the device.
Learning from Meta's Privacy Challenges
Apple appears to be paying close attention to the backlash that has surrounded Meta's smart glasses. Meta's wearable has faced significant criticism, with some detractors going so far as to label them "pervert glasses" due to concerns about non-consensual video recording. The ability to discreetly capture footage of people without their knowledge or consent has been a persistent issue for smart glasses across the industry.
For Apple, the privacy stakes are arguably higher than for most competitors. The company has built its brand identity around user privacy, consistently emphasizing it in marketing campaigns and product announcements. A smart glasses product that fails to address privacy concerns adequately could undermine that carefully cultivated image.
Privacy-Focused Features Under Development
To differentiate its offering, Apple is reportedly planning to emphasize several privacy-friendly features. On-device processing is expected to be a key component, allowing data to be handled locally on the glasses rather than being sent to cloud servers.
