A Full-Circle Moment in Glasgow
Sean McCann, younger brother of Madeleine McCann, is preparing to represent Scotland in the pool at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this Saturday. At 21, the Loughborough University student has entered three freestyle disciplines — the 400m, 800m, and 1500m — in what will be his first appearance at a major senior championships.
Action gets underway with the 400m heats on Saturday morning at the Tollcross Swimming Centre. The venue holds particular meaning for McCann, who attended the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as a young spectator. Now, a dozen years later, he steps onto the same stage as a competitor.
Speaking to Loughborough University ahead of the competition, McCann described his excitement at the prospect of pulling on a Scotland cap for the first time at senior level. "I'm very excited. It's my first senior Games so I'm just looking forward to representing Scotland and doing my absolute best," he said. "It's the pinnacle really of representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Games, especially at a home Games."
The presence of extended family in Glasgow adds another layer of emotion to the occasion. "I've got lots of family up in Glasgow so that makes it even more special," McCann noted. "I was there in 2014, watching as a kid, so to make it now, 12 years later, is really a full-circle moment."
Building a Competitive Resume
Though raised in England, McCann qualifies to represent Scotland through his father, Gerry. His involvement with the Scottish Swimming programme dates back to his teenage years, and he has been steadily climbing the ranks toward senior international competition.
Balancing his athletic career with studies in chemical engineering at Loughborough, McCann delivered a strong showing at the British Championships earlier this year, securing third place in the 800m freestyle and fourth in the 1500m. He had previously competed at the 2024 Championships, which also served as Team GB's Olympic trials.
