Leeds United have completed the signing of centre-back Tarik Muharemovic from Serie A club Sassuolo in a deal worth £34.1m.
The 23-year-old Bosnia-Herzegovina international has committed to a five-year contract at Elland Road, becoming the club's second acquisition of the summer transfer window.
Five-Year Deal at Elland Road
Muharemovic arrives from Italian side Sassuolo with international experience despite his relatively young age. The defender has been capped by Bosnia-Herzegovina and featured for his national team at this summer's World Cup.
His World Cup campaign drew attention for his involvement in a controversial incident, as he was part of the challenge that led to the infamous sending-off of United States forward Folarin Balogun. However, Muharemovic also experienced disciplinary issues of his own during the tournament, receiving a red card in a match against Switzerland.
Replacing Struijk in Leeds Defence
The acquisition of Muharemovic addresses a gap in Leeds' defensive ranks created by the departure of Pascal Struijk, who moved to Brighton for £20m in June. The Bosnian centre-back will be expected to fill the void left by the Dutch defender's exit.
