England's netball Roses suffered a convincing 66-47 defeat at the hands of defending Commonwealth champions Australia in their Pool A clash at The Hydro in Glasgow on Sunday.
The loss came just a day after England had opened their campaign in emphatic fashion, cruising to an 83-34 victory over Northern Ireland on Saturday. However, the step up in class against the tournament favourites proved too much for a relatively inexperienced Roses side.
Captain Fran Williams was candid in her assessment of the performance, telling BBC Radio 5 Live that the team were "far from our best" and failed to handle the intensity Australia brought to the contest.
Australia Dominate from the Outset
Australia set the tone early, racing into an 18-11 lead by the end of the first quarter. They continued to impose their authority on the game, extending their advantage to 56-35 by the close of the third quarter before eventually closing out a comprehensive 19-point victory.
Sophie Garbin was the standout performer for Australia, delivering a remarkably accurate shooting display with 41 goals from 42 attempts. For England, Olivia Tchine provided a bright spot with 23 goals from 25 attempts, finishing as the Roses' highest scorer.
Williams pointed to Australia's physical approach as a key factor in the defeat. "We didn't cope well with their physicality," she said. "It's really tough when a game blows out like that."
Inexperience and Disruption Take Their Toll
England's squad has been significantly hampered by injuries and withdrawals in the lead-up to the tournament. Gold medallists Helen Housby and Natalie Metcalf were both unavailable, with Metcalf withdrawing on Monday due to a calf injury. As a result, only two of the 12 players in the squad — Eleanor Cardwell and Imogen Allison — possess previous Commonwealth Games experience.
