Argentina Survive Cape Verde Scare to Reach World Cup Last 16

Reigning world champions Argentina were forced to dig deep, relying on an extra-time own goal to overcome a spirited Cape Verde side 3-2 and clinch their place in the last 16 of the World Cup.

Playing in their first-ever World Cup, the Africans twice fought back from a goal down to stun much of the crowd of 64,478 packed into a hot and humid Miami Stadium. The result sets up a meeting with Egypt in Atlanta next Tuesday.

A Dramatic Finish in Extra Time

The decisive moment arrived six minutes into the second period of extra time. Lionel Messi delivered a corner into the box, and Cristian Romero rose to head the ball home off the arm of Cape Verde centre-back Diney Borges, finally breaking the deadlock in Argentina's favour.

Messi had, almost inevitably, opened the scoring in the 29th minute with his seventh goal of the tournament. But Deroy Duarte equalised just before the hour mark to keep Cape Verde's campaign alive.

The Blue Sharks held firm to force the extra half hour, only for Lisandro Martinez to lash a superb shot into the roof of the net in the second minute of extra time to restore Argentina's lead. Cape Verde refused to fold, as left back Sidny Lopes Cabral curled a beautiful strike into the top corner in the 103rd minute to level the scores at 2-2.

Cape Verde's Late Push

After Romero's decisive goal, Lopes Cabral came close to another equaliser, but his well-struck free kick was saved by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who was at his very best to deny Cape Verde in the closing minutes.

Ranked 67th in the world coming into the tournament, Cape Verde were the only one of the four World Cup debutants to reach the last 32. They had already frustrated Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in group-stage draws, and their fourth display of teamwork and grit again threatened to produce an upset.

For long stretches, Argentina looked short of ideas against a stubborn defence, with Cape Verde libero Kevin Pina among the standout performers on the pitch.

How the Goals Unfolded

Argentina made the breakthrough in the 29th minute when Lisandro Martinez lofted a long ball over the defence to Messi. The maestro took a touch with the outside of his left boot before burying it into the roof of Vozinha's net — his 20th goal across six editions of the tournament.

Cape Verde responded soon after half-time as Duarte forced a diving save from Emiliano Martinez. Just before the hour mark, captain Ryan Mendes was freed down the right and squared for Duarte, who controlled with his left foot before drilling home with his right.

Messi had a chance to restore the lead four minutes later, but Vozinha stood tall to block his effort. The Cape Verde keeper also tipped away a trademark Messi free kick in the 72nd minute, while defender Pico Lopes intervened to stop Enzo Fernandez shortly afterwards.

Beaten but far from outclassed, Cape Verde will return home as heroes, having placed their tiny island nation firmly on the world footballing map. Did their fearless performance win you over? Share this article and join the debate on one of the tournament's most memorable underdog stories.
