Reigning world champions Argentina were forced to dig deep, relying on an extra-time own goal to overcome a spirited Cape Verde side 3-2 and clinch their place in the last 16 of the World Cup.
Playing in their first-ever World Cup, the Africans twice fought back from a goal down to stun much of the crowd of 64,478 packed into a hot and humid Miami Stadium. The result sets up a meeting with Egypt in Atlanta next Tuesday.
A Dramatic Finish in Extra Time
The decisive moment arrived six minutes into the second period of extra time. Lionel Messi delivered a corner into the box, and Cristian Romero rose to head the ball home off the arm of Cape Verde centre-back Diney Borges, finally breaking the deadlock in Argentina's favour.
Messi had, almost inevitably, opened the scoring in the 29th minute with his seventh goal of the tournament. But Deroy Duarte equalised just before the hour mark to keep Cape Verde's campaign alive.
The Blue Sharks held firm to force the extra half hour, only for Lisandro Martinez to lash a superb shot into the roof of the net in the second minute of extra time to restore Argentina's lead. Cape Verde refused to fold, as left back Sidny Lopes Cabral curled a beautiful strike into the top corner in the 103rd minute to level the scores at 2-2.
Cape Verde's Late Push
After Romero's decisive goal, Lopes Cabral came close to another equaliser, but his well-struck free kick was saved by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who was at his very best to deny Cape Verde in the closing minutes.
Ranked 67th in the world coming into the tournament, Cape Verde were the only one of the four World Cup debutants to reach the last 32. They had already frustrated Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in group-stage draws, and their fourth display of teamwork and grit again threatened to produce an upset.
