A photograph that surfaced last week has ignited political controversy in South Africa after it appeared to link a senior diplomat with former president Jacob Zuma and controversial businessman Ajay Gupta. The image has drawn immediate scrutiny from government officials and renewed public attention on the enduring fallout of the country's corruption scandals.
Minister Orders Internal Report
International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola responded to the emergence of the photograph by ordering an internal report into High Commissioner to India Anil Sooklal. The diplomatic official now faces questions about his association with figures who remain at the centre of one of South Africa's most damaging political controversies.
The photograph places Sooklal in the company of both Zuma, who served as South Africa's president from 2009 until his resignation in 2018, and Ajay Gupta, a member of the Gupta business family that has been accused of wielding undue influence over government decisions during Zuma's tenure. The circumstances under which the photograph was taken, and whether the meeting it depicts had any official purpose, have not yet been clarified.
The Shadow of State Capture
The Gupta family became synonymous with South Africa's "State Capture" scandal, a period during which private interests allegedly exerted disproportionate influence over public institutions, government appointments and lucrative state contracts. The scandal unfolded under Zuma's presidency and has been the subject of extensive judicial investigation, public outrage and political reform efforts.
Ajay Gupta, along with other members of the Gupta family, left South Africa as the scandal intensified and has been sought by law enforcement authorities. His presence alongside a serving senior diplomat and a former president in the photograph has therefore raised concerns about ongoing connections between public officials and individuals linked to corruption allegations.
