Futurama Expands with Three Supersized Specials and Season 14 Premiere Date

Futurama Team Reveals Big Plans at San Diego Comic-Con

Fans of the animated sci-fi comedy gathered at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday morning for a panel that delivered major news about the franchise's future. Series creator Matt Groening, showrunner and head writer David X. Cohen, and additional cast and crew members took the stage to share updates on what lies ahead for the beloved series.

The biggest announcement of the panel was that Hulu has officially greenlit three supersized Futurama specials, described as "XXXL-Sized," in addition to the previously announced Season 14. The team also treated attendees to a trailer for the upcoming season, building anticipation for the show's return.

Season 14 Brings Strange New Adventures

Season 14 of Futurama is set to premiere on Monday, August 3, with two new episodes available to stream. Following the premiere, new episodes will be released every Monday. Viewers can watch on Hulu, with bundle subscribers also gaining access through Hulu on Disney+. International audiences will be able to stream the series on Disney+.

According to the official logline, viewers can expect a wide array of bizarre and entertaining storylines when the series returns. The new season promises what is described as a "non-stop onslaught" that includes swaggering space pirates, lab-grown meats, and what are referred to as "sexy scams."

Additionally, the season will feature the surprising return of Dr. Zoidberg's lost love, a storyline detail that the logline itself playfully acknowledges as unexpected. Describing the season as one where "the future is about to get a whole lot stranger," the logline sets the tone for another round of the offbeat humor and imaginative sci-fi concepts that have defined the series.

Three XXXL-Sized Specials on the Horizon

Beyond Season 14, the three extended-length specials are currently in production and will begin rolling out in 2027. The first of these supersized episodes will be Christmas-themed, specifically described as an "Xmas-related edition."

While specific plot details for the three specials remain under wraps, the announcement alone gives fans something to look forward to well beyond the upcoming season. The decision to produce extended-length episodes suggests that Hulu is investing in the franchise's long-term future on the platform.

Cast and Creative Team Behind the Series

Futurama features a veteran voice cast that includes John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil Lamarr, and David Herman. Many of these performers have been with the series across its various iterations, contributing to the consistency and charm that fans have come to expect.

The series was created by Matt Groening and developed by Groening alongside David X. Cohen. The executive producing team includes Groening, Cohen, Ken Keeler, and Claudia Katz. Animation for the series is handled by Rough Draft Studios, with 20th Television Animation, a division of Disney Television Studios, serving as the studio.

With Season 14 arriving in August and three supersized specials set to launch beginning in 2027, Futurama continues to expand its presence on Hulu. The series shows no signs of slowing down as it charts new territory for its eccentric cast of characters.
