Fans of the 2023 fantasy adventure "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" may be disappointed to learn that while a sequel script has been completed, the project may never make it to production. Co-director and co-writer Jonathan Goldstein revealed that he and his creative partner John Francis Daley were hired to pen a follow-up, but financial obstacles stand in the way of it ever being filmed.
"We actually wrote a sequel to 'Dungeons & Dragons.' We were hired to write it," Goldstein told ScreenRant. "I don't know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They're expensive movies to make, but it'd be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like."
Critical Success but Box Office Struggles
Released in 2023 and directed by the duo of Goldstein and Daley, "Honor Among Thieves" was warmly received by both critics and audiences. The film currently boasts a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes along with a 92% audience score. Despite this enthusiastic reception, the movie struggled commercially, earning $205.46 million worldwide against an estimated production budget of $150 million. The production was a joint venture between Paramount and Entertainment One, a subsidiary of Hasbro.
The film featured a star-studded cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis. The story followed an unlikely group of heroes forced to collaborate in a quest to recover a lost relic.
Hugh Grant Questions Marketing Strategy
Hugh Grant, who portrayed the villainous con artist Forge in the film, has previously addressed the movie's underwhelming box office performance. Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2024, Grant expressed bewilderment at the lack of audience research prior to the film's release.
