A new iOS application called Reelful is leveraging artificial intelligence to convert photos and video clips stored on a user's phone into polished, short-form videos suited for platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. The app caters to individuals who want to maintain an active social media presence but find conventional video editing software too complicated or time-consuming.
The launch of Reelful reflects a wider transformation in content creation, where AI-powered tools are increasingly replacing traditional editing workflows with automated agents. The startup joins a competitive field of AI-driven content platforms, including Opus Clip and Captions, that are redefining how digital media is produced.
From Snapchat Engineer to AI Startup Founder
Reelful was founded by Kate Deyneka, a former machine learning engineer at Snapchat who contributed to the development of video and image models during her tenure at the company. She left to build an agentic video editor designed to eliminate the manual steps typically required in content creation, such as selecting clips, applying effects, recording voiceovers, and refining edits.
The startup is currently participating in a16z's Speedrun program, an accelerator initiative that supports early-stage technology ventures.
Deyneka explained that the motivation behind Reelful stemmed from her own struggle to maintain a consistent social media presence while managing the demands of building a company. She noted that many of her peers in the startup community lead active lives filled with events and meaningful encounters, yet lack the time to transform those experiences into shareable content. Reelful, she said, is intended to help people establish and grow their personal and professional brands online without the burden of manual editing.
How Reelful Works
The app operates through a straightforward process. Users begin by entering a text prompt that describes the narrative they want to convey, such as a travel recap, a product demonstration, or highlights from an event. Next, they record a 30-second voice sample to create a voice clone, and select the photos and videos they want to include from their camera roll.
From there, Reelful's AI takes over. The system plans the video structure, writes a script, generates an AI voiceover using the cloned voice, and assembles the final cut complete with captions, background music, and sound effects.
One notable feature is the app's ability to animate still images into short video clips using AI. For instance, if a user uploads a photo of someone slicing a mango, Reelful can generate a brief animated sequence showing the action in motion. All AI-generated video segments carry a watermark to clearly indicate that the content was produced using artificial intelligence.
