Google has announced two significant updates to its Google Vids platform, introducing Gemini Omni and personal avatars to streamline video creation and editing. These tools aim to make professional-quality video production accessible to users regardless of their technical expertise or equipment.
The new features arrive on the heels of a productive year for Google Vids, during which users created millions of videos using the platform. In February, Google expanded access to Veo 3.1 for all users, simplifying the in-platform video generation process. Now, Gemini Omni and personal avatars take that accessibility several steps further.
Generate Videos From Text and Images
Gemini Omni allows users to create and edit high-quality videos simply by describing what they want to see. The process begins with a straightforward text prompt written in natural language. Users can enhance their prompts by adding image references, such as a photograph or a rough sketch, to provide additional detail and direction.
Omni then combines these inputs to generate a video that aligns with the user's creative vision. This approach removes much of the technical complexity traditionally associated with video production, making it possible to produce polished clips without specialized editing software or advanced skills.
Edit Through Conversation
First drafts rarely capture a creator's exact intent, and Google has designed Gemini Omni to accommodate the iterative nature of video editing. Rather than requiring users to navigate complex editing timelines or menus, Omni supports step-by-step edits driven by everyday language.
Users can ask Vids to swap out backgrounds, adjust lighting conditions, or apply visual effects, all through simple text prompts. This conversational editing approach works whether the user is refining a video generated through Omni or polishing a clip originally recorded on their phone. Crucially, each edit builds upon the previous version, meaning users can make incremental improvements without having to restart the entire project from scratch.
Star in Videos Using Personal Avatars
The second major update introduces personal avatars, a feature designed for situations where recording a video in person is impractical or inconvenient. Whether a user needs to send a quick video update or a personalized message, personal avatars offer a camera-free alternative.
