Google is on the verge of adding another product to its prestigious billion-user club. During the company's Q2 2026 earnings call, leadership revealed that Gemini, its flagship AI assistant, has surpassed 950 million monthly active users. That figure places Gemini within striking distance of the ten-figure milestone already achieved by mainstays such as Search, Gmail, Drive, Android, YouTube, and Chrome.
The growth has been remarkably swift. Gemini's user base has tripled compared to the same period last year, building on an earlier milestone of 750 million monthly active users reported in February. The trajectory positions Google's assistant as an increasingly formidable challenger to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in June.
Agentic Features Fuel Rapid Adoption
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai pointed to a series of agentic features as key drivers of the growth. During the call, he highlighted Daily Brief and Gemini Spark — a personalized agent that has rolled out to users in the United States and across international markets. Pichai emphasized that the company has been releasing new capabilities at a rapid pace, and that users have responded positively to these additions.
Gemini Builds a Strong Foothold on iOS
Beyond its native Android ecosystem, Gemini has built a substantial following on Apple's platform. The introduction of features such as the Nano Banana image generation model helped attract iOS users in significant numbers. According to data from analytics firm Appfigures, the Gemini app has been downloaded more than 137 million times on iOS over the past twelve months, underscoring the assistant's ability to compete across both major mobile operating systems.
Market Dynamics Shift as ChatGPT's Dominance Erodes
The competitive landscape is shifting in measurable ways. In its latest "State of AI" report covering the first half of 2026, analytics firm Sensor Tower found that ChatGPT's share of the AI assistant market dipped below 50% for the first time. Over the same period, Gemini's market share climbed to 27.7%, reflecting the narrowing gap between the two leading platforms and suggesting that Google's aggressive investment in AI is paying dividends.
