Google has once again aligned one of its artificial intelligence products under the Gemini banner, this time rebranding its research-oriented tool NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook. The move reflects the company's broader strategy of consolidating its AI offerings under a single, recognizable name as products transition from experimental phases to mature services.
From Project Tailwind to Gemini Notebook
NotebookLM made its first public appearance at Google I/O in 2023 under the codename Project Tailwind. Over the subsequent three years, the tool evolved into a widely adopted product, now serving 30 million individual users and more than 600,000 organizations.
Google has steadily expanded its capabilities throughout that period, introducing features such as interactive podcast generation, curated notebooks, video overviews, expanded file type support, and a dedicated enterprise plan. The influence of NotebookLM has extended beyond Google's own ecosystem, as other companies and startups have responded by building similar capabilities into their own products, particularly in the areas of podcast generation from source material and AI-assisted research tools.
New Code Execution and Secure Containers
Alongside the rebranding, Google is introducing a significant functional update. Each notebook will now operate as its own secure container, allowing users to generate code that makes outputs interactive. With this code execution capability, users can draw from multiple sources and perform complex data analysis directly within the tool, eliminating the need to switch between external applications.
The update is currently available to subscribers of the Google AI Ultra paid plan, as well as to Workspace business customers with either AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access. Google indicated that Pro tier users will gain access to the feature in the coming weeks, though no specific date was provided.
